Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions from our patients.
  • Is telepsychiatry effective?
Current research supports the position that counseling provided via video teleconference or telephone can be as effective as in-person counseling.
  • Is PsychConnect right for me?
If you are experiencing behavioral health symptoms and need to access a psychiatric evaluation, medication management, or counseling services, PsychConnect may be right for you. If you have a serious mental illness that requires acute care, PsychConnect is not right for you.
  • What conditions / disorders do you treat?
Our clinicians have expertise in many specialties and can treat most psychiatric conditions including:
    • Depression
    • Anxiety
    • ADHD
    • PTSD
    • Psychotic Disorders
    • Substance Use Disorders
    • Eating Disorders

We cannot accept patients with conditions that require a higher level of care, such as schizophrenia and bipolar 1.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected] and we can advise whether we can accept you as a patient.
  • How do online sessions work?
Once you have an appointment, you will be sent an email and/or text message confirmation. This will include the link to your telemedicine meeting room. Before, or at the time of your appointment, you will click on this link from the device you want to use (laptop, tablet, or phone) and this will put you in the provider’s meeting room. As soon as they are ready to see you, they will begin the session and see them in a large video format with a small picture of yourself (so you can make sure that camera is pointed at you and you are within view). The connection uses a web based video service and the page is secured with SSL, similar to what is used by banks, so the video is fully secure. The provider will have already received your initial paperwork and based on that information will begin discussing the issues you are facing and how they can help. They will take and save notes on the session, so whether you see them again or another provider, the information from the session is stored within our secure, HIPAA-compliant medical record. At the conclusion of the session the provider will schedule a follow-up appointment, if appropriate, and can do so while you are still in the video call. You will then exit the video - no software is installed and no changes are made to your device so there is nothing to uninstall.
  • What medications do you prescribe?
We prescribe most antidepressants and some anti-anxiety medications.

We do not prescribe medication for ADHD for adults. We do not prescribe controlled substances such as Xanax or Klonopin. PsychConnect providers will work with you to find an alternative solution.

  • Can I get a prescription for ADHD?
Prescriptions for controlled substances will not be written for adults. Children, however, may be prescribed a stimulant medication in accordance with evidence-based treatment for ADHD/ADD.
  • Can I get a prescription for opioid addiction?
You can request a psychiatric evaluation with an APRN to determine if prescription medication which is not classified as a controlled substance (e.g. naltrexone) would be a clinically appropriate course of treatment. At this time, PsychConnect providers will not issue prescriptions for controlled substances to treat substance use disorders.

You can also request an appointment with a counselor to determine whether participation in behavioral therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy or contingency management therapy could be beneficial to your recovery.
